 History Of Lahore Fort

In the city of Lahore, a fort is present and the name of the fort is Royal fort or Shahi Qila. This fort was built in 11 century .in 17th century, this fort was reconstructed. Now it is under the authority of the Punjab government. A city called Walled city is present in Lahore and this fort is present in the north end of this city in Lahore.

Location

Lahore fort is situated in the east of Hazuri Bagh. The other important Pakistan historical places like Minar-e-Pakistan and Iqbal park is situated near to this Fort.

Early History

This fort is established in a period called millennia. Millennia are a period that consists of a thousand years. The origin of this Royal Fort is unclear and based on various stories.

Delhi Sultanate

This fort was a createdin11th century during the time of Mahmud of Ghazni. Mud is the material from which this fort was constructed. In 1241; the Mongols were the ones who demolishes this fort while conquering Lahore. In 1267, this fort was rebuilt by Sultan Balban the Turkic Mamluk dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. In 1398 the forces of Tamur again demolish this fort. In 1421, Mubarak shah Syed is the one, who again start the construction of this fort. Shaikh Ali of Kabul. Was the one who occupied this Royal fort in 1430. In 1526, this fort was occupied by the Mughal emperor Babur.

Akbar period

In 1575, the Mughal Emperor Akbar conquers this fort and he used this Royal fort to protect the Northwest border of the empire. During this period this fort was reconstructed with Solid Brick masonry. These are the structures Doulat Khana-e-Khas-o-Am, Jharoka-e-Darshan, and Akbari Gate that were built during the Akbar period.

Jahangir Period

In 1612, Emperor Jahangir modified this fort and constructs a Maktab Khana in this fort. During Jahangir period, a picture wall was built the scenes on the picture wall demonstrate many of the moments of the court life of Mughal. During Jahangir region, a Mosque was built. The mosque that was built adjacent to this fort is called is a Mariam Zamani Begum Mosque.

Shah Jahan period

Shah Jahan's first contribution to this fort begins in the year of his crowing in 1628 and continued until the year of 1645. Diva-e-Aam was constructed in the period of Shah Jahan. This Fort was built by a Persian style architect and consists of 40 Pillar hall for the audience. During the period of Shah Jahan, Shah Burj was renovated by Asif Khan.

Aurangzeb Period

 During the period of Aurangzeb, the Alamgiri gate was constructed. This gate is known as the symbol of Lahore.

Naulakha Pavilion

In1633, The Naulakha Pavilion was built during the time of Shah Jahan. This pavilion was made up of white marble. This Pavilion was famous for his amazing and distinctive curvilinear roof. The total cost of the construction of this pavilion is 900,000. This pavilion derives its name from Naulakha, an Urdu word900, 000. This pavilion was located in the Northern section of the fort.

Picture wall


A picture wall was constructed during the region of Jahangir. The total panels present in this wall is116. Many scenes of past moments are displayed on these walls. Many panels show elephant fights. After his period, the condition of this wall is not good due to negligence. In 2015, this wall was renovated by Agha Khan's trust and Walled city authorities. Picture wall

Sheesh Mahal

In the Jahangir period, In the northwest corner of this Royal Fort, a Sheesh Mahal was built in shah Burj block. This mahal was used by royal families.

Khilawat Khana

 In 1633, a building was constructed in this fort called Khilawat Khana. This building was constructed during the period of Shah Jahan. This building, called khilawat Khana was used for the accommodation of royal ladies of the court.

Kala Burj

A building called Kala Burj was constructed on the northwest side of the Khilawat Khana. Another name of his building is the Black pavilion.

Moti Masjid


A Masjid called Moti Masjid was built on the west side of this royal fort. This mosque was constructed during the Shah Jahan period. This mosque was situated near to the Alamgiri gate. This mosque was made up of white marble. During the Sikh period, this mosque was converted into a temple. They called this mosque Moti temple.

Akbari gate

In 1566 a gate was built in this fort. The name of this gate is the Akbari gate. This gate was built during the shah Jaha period. Now another name of this gate is the Akbari gate.


Alamgiri gate

A gate called Alamgiri gate was built in 1674 on the west side of this fort. This gate is the main entrance of this fort. This gate was constructed during the Aurangzeb emperor.
